We are a small lay Buddhist group in Victoria, BC, Canada — currently 7 meditators — that meets weekly for meditation and study. In the fall and spring of each year we have a weekend meditation retreat. We are affiliated with the Aukana Trust Meditation Centre, located in the U.K.
Our simple practice, lacking rituals, costumes, and honorific titles is derived from the Thai forest tradition via Alan James of Aukana. Paul MacRae, a student of Alan James, founded the Victoria group in 1998 and led it until his retirement.
During our weekly meetings, we do 45 minutes of vipassana (insight) meditation, take a short tea break, then have a lesson – a dhamma talk (usually taped), a sutta reading, or a short presentation by one of the meditators, followed by discussion.
Members practice daily meditation at home, observe the five Buddhist precepts, and abstain from other forms of spiritual practice.
